# Knowledge panels and Wikidata: how brand corroboration works

What a Google knowledge panel is, which sources corroborate an Australian business from registries down to directories, why Wikidata rarely applies to a local business, what can be influenced, and what corroboration looks like when it is working.

## What a knowledge panel is

DOCUMENTED Google describes knowledge panels as “information boxes that appear on Google when you search for entities (people, places, organizations, things) that are in the Knowledge Graph”. They “are automatically generated”, their information “comes from various sources across the web”, and they are “updated automatically as information changes on the web”. They are not a listing a business applies for; a verified entity can suggest edits to facts on its own panel, but the panel itself is assembled from what the web says. Google’s own AI Overviews help page groups the two features together: AI Overviews are “a core Google Search feature, like knowledge panels”.

INFERRED The same corroboration that produces a panel is what lets any system describe a business confidently. That is why no provider should guarantee a panel, and why the useful goal is being a consistently described entity rather than the box itself.

## The sources that corroborate an Australian business

DOCUMENTED These are the sources on which an Australian business is typically described, in the order this publication weighs them. The ordering is an inference from how hard each source is to manipulate and how independent it is; Google publishes no weighting.

- **Official registries.** ABN Lookup and the ASIC register. Hard to manipulate, easy to check, and the records businesses most often let go stale.
- **Professional and licensing bodies.** A law society, a licensing authority, a professional board. Independent proof the operator is real.
- **Industry publications and trade press.** Editorial coverage, conference listings, award records. Slow to accumulate.
- **Reputable directories and profiles.** Google Business Profile, industry directories, established national directories.
- **Wikidata.** Structured and machine-readable, and rarely applicable to a local business (below).
- **The business’s own website.** Necessary, but it cannot corroborate itself.

## The Wikidata question

DOCUMENTED Wikidata’s notability policy requires an item to refer to an instance of a clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity that can be described using serious and publicly available references, or to fulfil a structural need, or to be linked from a sister project such as Wikipedia. A consultancy or trade business with no independent coverage meets none of those tests, and items created without merit are nominated for deletion.

Most Australian small and medium businesses have no Wikidata item, and for most of them that is the correct state rather than a gap. Wikidata helps a business that already has independent coverage to record; it does not create coverage, and self-promotional editing is noticed.

## What can be influenced

1. **Make the registry records current.** Free, fast, and the highest-weighted source available. Most owners have never read their own public ABN or ASIC entry.
2. **Stop contradicting yourself.** A business cannot corroborate itself, but it can stop giving sources different facts to copy. The [consistency audit](https://aiseoperth.net.au/guides/entity-consistency-audit/) is the process.
3. **Express the relationships in markup.** Organization and Person schema with `sameAs` pointing at the authoritative profiles, per the [structured data guide](https://aiseoperth.net.au/guides/structured-data-entity-clarity/).
4. **Earn genuine third-party mentions.** Association listings, contributed articles, speaking records, editorial coverage. Slowest, most expensive, most durable.

If a panel already exists with wrong facts, Google offers a claim-and-suggest-edit process for the entity. INFERRED The durable fix is correcting what the third-party sources say, because a suggested edit that contradicts the sources Google reads is unlikely to hold.

## What corroboration looks like when it is working

Search the business name and read the top ten results excluding its own domain. Early on, most businesses find two or three sparse listings. As corroboration develops: current registry records, an active association listing, a publication mention, a detailed profile, all stating the same facts. Consistency of the facts is the signal, not the count of links.

Then ask an assistant to describe the business, in fresh sessions, more than once. A hedged or wrong answer means the sources disagree or are thin. A correct answer with specifics the owner recognises means the sources agree. Repeat monthly; a single answer is not a verdict.

## Priorities for a business with almost no coverage

Fix the registry records. Claim existing profiles before creating new ones, because abandoned duplicates create the conflicts the exercise is meant to remove. Join the two or three industry listings that apply, such as the relevant licensing body or association, rather than generic web directories. Only then pursue earned coverage. Avoid bulk directory submission: it adds low-authority duplicates with slightly wrong details, and every wrong detail is a new conflict.

## Timelines and the limit

INFERRED Registry corrections can reflect in weeks. Independent coverage accumulating to the point of producing a panel is a year-scale project if it happens at all, because it depends on other people publishing and on Google recrawling. What can be done is the work: current records, consistent facts, explicit relationships, a sequenced corroboration plan. Whether a panel appears is decided by an automated system nobody outside Google controls.

## What is documented and what is inferred

- **Documented:** how Google describes knowledge panels; Wikidata’s notability policy; the Australian registry sources.
- **Inferred:** the authority ordering of sources; the durability of source-level fixes over suggested edits; timelines.
- **Not established:** any measured effect of corroboration on AI answers for Perth businesses, pending observation.
